Guided walk: “The Grand Bief of the Canal du Midi, a history of the past and present” (Capestang)

Office de Tourisme du Canal du Midi au Saint-Chinian Quai Elie Amouroux - 34310 Capestang

Discover the history behind the Canal du Midi and the technical feat that is the Grand Bief (or ‘long pound’), which manages to follow the same contour (height) of 31.35 metres above sea level for 54 kilometres.

Between the locks in Argens (a small Minervois village) and Fonsérannes (on the approach to Béziers), the Canal du Midi winds its way freely through the plane trees, cutting through the vineyards of two great regional AOC wines – Minervois and Saint-Chinian – where châteaux tower over the land, a reminder of the region’s wine-growing prosperity.

Don’t miss the chance to discover the amazing history of the Canal du Midi and its founder, Pierre-Paul Riquet, every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 pm at the tourist office.

The walk is followed by a free tasting session where you can sample wines and produce from our local producers.
